Second Meijer opens in Detroit

The number of options is continuing to grow for grocery shoppers in Detroit. The city's second Meijer store is now open and ready for business.

It's located at 21431 Grand River Avenue, which is between McNichols Road and Outer Drive.

Native Detroiters will recognize the address as the site of the old Redford High School.

The opening has created 270 new full-time jobs.

The 200,000 square foot store stands in the shadows of so many neighborhoods in northwest Detroit hungry for this type of change.

"Being able to get up in the morning and being able to come right to your local, neighborhood store - they're going to absolutely love it," says Jay Mahabir from Meijer. "We've had great feedback so far."

"Business. Police. Community. I call it the trifecta - it works. And we're getting it done," says Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "The other thing, I look out, and I see the potential new eighth precinct right outside that window. Yet another layer of safety in the city of Detroit."

The grand opening celebration continues through the weekend with planned activities and giveaways.

The city's first Meijer location opened at the corner of 8 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.
