5-year-old girl found dead in Port Huron, father, step-mother arrested

A 5-year-old girl found dead in a Port Huron home and three other children are in protective custody.

Police say Mckenzie Maison was abused and malnourished. Now her father and step-mother are under arrest, they are both charged with child abuse and depending on the investigation, possibly homicide.

The Port Huron Chief of Police Michael Reaves called the scene "horrific."

"She was the brightest little girl." said Shelby Coffee, Mckenzie's mother."Very independent, beautiful ... and she was my world."

Investigators say the child was found unresponsive after a call to police Tuesday night..

The child's father, Andy Maison lives there with his wife Hilery. Both are being held in connection with her death.

Meanwhile Mckenzie's grandfather is speaking out in defense of the two parents.

"I don't think it was an intentional starvation, it was not anything like that. said Frank Hawkins, "My daughter is not malicious nor is my son-in-law."

Mckenzie's mom, by her own admission was not in her daughter's life.

"I saw her a year and a half ago," Coffee said, adding, everytime she made an effort to see her two daughters, "Always excuses, too busy. Working, They're not here."

Neighbors tell us the Maison family kept to themselves.

Elizabeth Sanchez recalls seeing the 5-year-old only a handful of times.

"She just seemed sort of drained, like she woke up from a nap, kind of groggy," Sanchez said.

FOX 2: "Was she real skinny?"

"Yeah," said Sanchez. "They said she was five, she looked maybe three."

Mckenzie was one of four children in the house. Her younger sister Mckayla is in the hospital after police say she too was malnourished. Her two brothers are now in foster care.

"I'm at a loss," Hawkins said, "I'm scared for our grand babies and our daughter and i'm scared for my son-in-law."

"Watch out for your kids," Coffee said. "No matter what, if you think you can trust them or not. Make sure you watch out for your kids. One day you might turn around and get a phone call like I did."
