Custody case resumes for mom charged with killing 2 kids

A Detroit mother charged with killing two of her children and hiding their bodies in a freezer is scheduled to return to court for a custody hearing involving two surviving siblings.

Testimony is resuming Thursday in Mitchelle Blair's parental rights case in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Authorities want to terminate Blair's rights to her 17-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son.

A Child Protective Services worker took the stand Thursday morning, confirming the Department of Human Services had two prior complaints about child abuse and neglect in the Blair home - once in 2002, and again in 2005. The third time they came to the home, the children had already been found dead.

Blair was arrested March 24 after court deputies carrying out an eviction at her apartment found the bodies of 13-year-old Stoni Blair and 9-year-old Stephen Berry in the home's deep freezer. Police believe they died months apart in 2012 and 2013.

Blair is charged with murder, torture and child abuse. She is to undergo a mental competency exam before a June 19 hearing in the murder cases.

She entered the courtroom Thursday once again leading with a middle finger, but this one seemed to be directed at her children's fathers instead of the FOX 2 camera.

She introduced herself as she always does - stating she is the mother of her two surviving children and that she "always will be".

Another witness to take the stand Thursday was Michelle Barnette, the ex-girlfriend of one of the surviving children's fathers, Stephen Dorsey. She's a registered nurse and testified she never had a chance to talk with the children about their mother.

This is a developing story, and testimony is continuing in court Thursday. Stay with FOX 2 for updates.
