Detroit Bikes building custom 'Fat Tire' bikes for New Belgium Brewing Company

Detroit Bikes, a homegrown bicycling company, is amping up operations after receiving a massive order from a Colorado brewery.

The bike company is sending  2,415 custom rides to New Belgium Brewing Company, which is based in Fort Collins.

"We're really the only bike company in the country that could fulfill an order this size. There just isn't bike manufacturing in the United States anymore," says Detroit Bikes president, Zak Pashak. The custom bike shop on Detroit's west side is building the bikes inside its 50,000 square foot factory.

New Belgium Brewing Company plans to give them away as part of a promotion. The brewery's iconic logo features a bicycle.

"Every year, they give away two thousand bikes and they wanted to bring that production back to the U.S.," says Pashak. He says the bikes they're producing will be similar to the bike on the brewery's label.

He says they'll be hiring at least 10 more employees to fill the order, which will begin shipping in January.

Detroit Bikes currently produces two signature types of bikes, which are available now for purchase.
