Detroit man charged after 13-year-old killed in accidental shooting

The father of a 14-year-old who accidentally shot a 13-year-old girl with a rifle has been charged with with several crimes including manslaughter and child abuse.

Ivan Berrien, 45, was charged Thursday with the crimes related to the death of a 13-year-old girl Tuesday night at a home in the 1500 block of Lappin, two blocks north of Seven Mile Road.

According to police, Berrien left the two young teenagers and three other children home alone just before 5:00 p.m. that evening to go pick up a pizza. Police say after Berrien left, his 14-year-old son got his rifle out of the bedroom and he and the girl began playing with it. That's when it went off and a bullet hit the girl in the head. 

Police and emergency personnel were called but teenager could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Berrien was charged Tuesday with involuntary manslaughter, child abuse second degree, felon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm. He's expected to be arraigned Friday morning.
