Two months without answers after 5-year-old shot dead while sleeping

DETROIT (WJBK) - Police need your help to capture a cold-blooded killer who intentionally took the life of a 5-year-old girl while she slept in bed. The little girl's mother was also hit in the gunfire. 

The murder of Izabella Coleman goes back two months ago and Detroit police do not want the case to go cold. It's a shocking crime that happened around 10 in the evening on Sept. 14, 2018.

Someone walked into the home at the corner of Lyndon and Plainview, near Evergreen, on Detroit's west side. How this unknown man dressed in dark clothing got through the front door is unclear.
But what happened next is heartbreaking: 14 shots fired at Dejiza Coleman and her 5-year-old daughter, Izabella.

The bullets struck them while they were sleeping in bed. The innocent little girl died from her injuries. Her mother survived.
 
"How do I explain to a 3-year-old that they don't have a sister anymore?" Dejiza Coleman wonders. "I just want to know why. Why would they think that was okay? And it's crazy that they didn't hesitate. They have no heart. You didn't guess what you were doing."

In September police believed this tragedy stemmed from a feud but right now the direct motive remains unclear.

"We have a person of interest who has been cooperative throughout this case, but we don't have a suspect that can been named right now in this case," says Diondre Doks with the Detroit Police Department. 

Without a suspect named in the case, charges can't be filed.

"So, while we have evidence that has pointed us in many directions in this case, we don't feel confident in naming someone a suspect. If you do that, you better be sure they're the ones who did this," she adds. 

Police are asking anyone who knows anything about the shooting to speak up.

"We can't stop people from doing bad things if we don't speak up," says Keli Coleman, Izabella's grandmother.
