Driver dies after crashing car into Madison Heights store

A car slams into a fruit market tearing a huge hole in a brick wall Monday night.

The 22-year-old driver who hit the CK Fruit Market was killed and Madison Heights police believe the driver was drunk.

"The whole corner, the back of it is all damaged it has to come out," said owner Rabah Kirma. "The merchandise, not too much in the back corner."

Police say Talando Mattox was driving the Dodge Charger when it veered off John R and hit the market.

"It looked like mashed potatoes, you, know, how you chew the gum," Kirma said. "It's unbelievable. It's like there was nothing in there, no body, you couldn't see anything. It was terrible."

The 22-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.

"You can replace the building and the merchandise," Kirma said. "But the young man, the human being, will not come back."

Police say they are waiting for a toxicology report from the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office, but believe alcohol played a part in the accident.

And as police continue to investigate the accident, Kirma says he'll work to rebuild his store.

"May he rest in peace," said Kirma who said he was thinking Mattox's family. "God bless them and stay strong."
