Drug overdose ruled cause of death for police sergeant, friend found in garage

An official at the Wayne County Medical Examiner's office confirms to FOX 2 that drug overdose is the official cause of death for a police sergeant and his friend found dead last month in a Dearborn Heights garage.

Loved ones have been waiting for answers about the deaths of James McEwen and John Burdick, as preliminary autopsy results were inconclusive. Michigan Police began investigating, calling it a double homicide, although no signs of trauma were obvious to either body.

Burdick was an 18-year veteran with the department and a father of two. McEwen lived in the 8500 block of Lochdale Street with his girlfriend in the home where he and Burdick were found.

The official with the Wayne County Medical Examiner did not specify which type of drug was found in their systems.
