Eastpointe man to be tried for murder of baby and ex-girlfriend

An Eastpointe man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend and their 13 month-old baby will stand trial.

During his preliminary exam Thursday,  30-year-old Curtis Hampton could be seen crying, accused of killing the mother of his child Monique Rakowski and their 13-month-old daughter.

Hampton is charged with child abuse, criminal sexual conduct and first degree, premeditated murder. Police say Hampton, after stabbing Rakowski, placed the baby on top of her with her pacifier still in her mouth.

He then put coins over Rakowski's eyes.

The stepfather of 29-year-old Monique Rakowski tearfully recalled the moment he discovered his daughter and his 13-month-old granddaughter's bodies in court Thursday.

Michael Rakowski explained in detail how he found both on the bathroom floor of her Eastpointe home two months ago.

"I didn't expect to find anything when I opened the door," he said. "They were laying there and I couldn't believe it."

Attorney: "You pushed on the baby's chest and fluid came out?"

Rakowski: "Out of her mouth."

"Looking at her, I could see that her pants, her dark sweatpants, were were down her ankles," Rakowski said.

Also testifying, a medical examiner and Monique's mother, who said she knew something was wrong the day her daughter was killed.

But also taking the stand for the prosecution was Hampton's mother who said she received a disturbing text from her son that day and called him.

"I was startled when I woke up and read it," said Anita Hampton. "I just went into a panic mode."

The defense argued that the text messages could've come from anyone and are no admission of guilt.

Hampton is claiming self-defense that Monique was intoxicated and stabbed him and his child.

One of the attorneys asked Det. Joseph Madonia of Eastpointe police if he believes Monique Rakowski stabbed the child.

 "I don't know," he said.

Hampton, now bound over for trial on five counts, faces life in prison and a judge on  May 11.
