John Kasich holds town hall meeting in Livonia

LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) - Republican presidential candidate John Kasich spoke again with Michigan voters Tuesday morning. Fresh off a campaign stop in Utica Monday evening, he held a town hall meeting in Livonia.

He opened the meeting with a story about his 18-year-old self and how his first trip to the White House wasafter writing a letter to the president and actually getting a response. Now, he wants his next White House trip to be to the Oval Office.

He spoke more at the meeting about some ideas he has in the first 100 days of office that he believes will work, such as simplifying the tax code, cutting taxes right away and also working on saving social security. 

Hundreds of supporters packed the room to listen to Kasich. He is the one presidential candidate who has spent more time here in Michigan than any other.

"You want to fix your schools? Don't spend all your time talking about some far away issue that's in Washington. We give the power of the schools back to you, and I'd like to send all of the federal dollars back to you," he said, interrupted by applause. "Great! But what are you going to do to fix the schools? It's not somebody else - what about your schools? Why are there so many kids graduating that don't quite have the skills to go and get a job that exists today or tomorrow? Are we demanding excellence out of our schools? Are we talking to our school boards? That's where it works."

One thing he does not feel will work is offering free tuition to college kids. In fact, he's made several visits during his trip to Michigan. One, on Monday, was to Grand Valley State University and one to Michigan State University. He's said he doesn't believe making college tuition free is a solution, although he does believe making college more affordable is critical.

He's more of a Conservative when it comes to that than someone like Bernie Sanders, who does believe that college tuition should be allowed for everybody for free. Kasich came in second place after Donald Trump in New Hampshire, coming as a surprise to many that he pulled ahead of Cruz and Rubio. Coming up next is the big primary in South Carolina on Saturday, which is where Kasich is headed after leaving Michigan.
