Escaped NY fugitive Richard Matt shot and killed by police

One of two fugitives wanted after escaping from a New York prison earlier this month has been shot and killed by police.

Richard Matt was shot by police near Malone, NY Friday afternoon. Police were chasing the other man, David Sweat, after the shooting.

Sweat and Matt escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, NY on June 6. Malone is 37 miles northwest of Dannemora.

Earlier in the day on Friday, police said they believed the escaped killers to be heading north to Canada, which is just north of Malone.Sweat, 35, was serving a life sentence without parole for killing a sheriff's deputy. 

Matt, 48, was doing 25 years to life for the 1997 kidnapping, torture and hacksaw dismemberment of his former boss.
