Family of 12-year-old killed in Roseville speak to Fox 2

A 12-year-old girl has died after getting hit by a car Friday night in Roseville. 

The girl, identified as 12-year-old Lakenya Coleman by her family had been shopping with her mother and cousin Friday night at the Eastgate Shopping Center and were walking to a family member's home in Roseville when she was struck.  

According to police, the group was crossing the North Bound lanes of Gratiot, south of Glendale St, attempting to cross Gratiot Ave. 

That is when, police say a black 2007 Ford Fusion was traveling North on Gratiot when the vehicle struck Coleman.

Witnesses stopped to assist and when Roseville Police arrived immediate CPR was performed by arriving officers until emergency crews were able to get on scene. Coleman was transported to St. John Hospital where she succumbed from her injuries. Coleman's aunt Quintel Burdine says Lakenya "did good in school" and "didn't deserve this."

Police say the driver is a 32-year-old male from Rochester Hills. The man stopped after the incident. According to police, the man was on the way to pick up his daughter.

At the time of the incident, the roadway was wet and it was raining. The weather conditions may have played a part in this incident according to the police.

At this point in the investigation, police do not believe drugs or alcohol were present in the driver's system. At this time charges have not been filed.
