Family wants answers year after fatal hit and run of bicyclist in Livonia

It has been a year since a hit and run driver left a bicyclist to die in a Livonia intersection.

The victim's family hopes a bigger reward will help bring the killer to justice.

Not a day goes by, the brothers of 64-year-old Dennis Ryan say that they don't miss his smile, his laugh and his giving nature.

Glancing down at photos of their brother and best friend, Dale and Austin Ryan one year later, say they feel frozen in time. Both vividly recall the evening of May 19, 2014.

Livonia police say Dennis was riding his bike along Newburgh and Schoolcraft, was hit. The driver left the scene, with Dennis still alive.

"They told me your brother passed away," said Austin Ryan, his brother. "He was in an accident. It is the last thing we ever expected.

"Somebody knew they hit him. It wasn't a tap and they hit him. He really got nailed and somebody drove off."

His family says Dennis would ride his bike several miles each day to visit his disabled son, Denny and was on his way home that night during the I-96 construction project.

"They had orange barrels that lined the different lanes," said Dale Ryan, his brother. "So cars were confused, I drove that area many times after the accident and I could see how that it would get chaotic."

Police say four people stopped at the scene and called 911, but no one saw the actual crash. Police say it was dark when the accident happened and even worse, the traffic cameras lining I-96 were all turned off during the construction, Dale said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward for information on who killed Dennis Ryan. His family has increased that reward to $10,000.

"For someone to just leave him there to die is pretty heartbreaking," Dale said.

"Anybody you ask that knew my brother (would say) he wasn't just a regular guy," Austin said. "He was a very beloved individual."

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
