Fire claims Oak Park apartments as families jump to safety

With fire ripping apart their apartment complex, they were forced with one option: Jump out of their burning apartment complex. They all escaped with their lives but not unhurt.

Eight families are out of their home as everything inside torched.

"Furniture, TV, laptop everything I worked for is gone. It sucks so much." Jessica Walker it all.

The early morning fire destroyed the apartment she shared with her boyfriend, Daniel Greer. Walker and Greer called the place home until Thursday morning when the fire ignited.

"I was laying down and heard alarms going off. By time I got up and checked, the flames were on our wall. " Greer said.

That's when the couple says they knew they had to do something quick or else die.

"We're on second floor and could not use the stairs so our first instinct was get on balcony and jump," Greer said.

Jessica waited for help. She said she was too scared to jump and waited for firefighters to arrive with a ladder and help her down. Crews at the scene also helped a dad and his two children get to safety. That family was in an apartment directly above the flames

Dad handed his young daughters over the balcony to the officers before being able to climb out himself.

Public safety officials say they are still investigating the cause of the fire but they don't believe it's suspicious. They're just happy everyone got out of the 8 apartments in this unit.

The couple has created a GoFundMe account for anyone wishing to help them get back on their feet. Click here to donate.
