Firefighter burned while battling abandoned apartment building fire

A firefighter has been injured on the job on Detroit's east side.

Firefighters were at an abandoned apartment building in the area of Mayfield Street and Dickerson Avenue, which is near Gratiot Avenue.

We're told the lieutenant suffered burns to his face and has been taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

"He went, and he pulled the door, and when he did the flame came down and consumed him," says Battalion Chief Richard Gainer. "It couldn't really be avoided, either. ... He didn't do anything wrong; it just goes with the territory."

The firefighter is expected to be okay.

The battalion chief also tells us the crew had problems getting the proper water flow from nearby hydrants, which is an ongoing issue the city has been working to improve.
