One of the units could be seen with flames shooting from the roof in images provided by SkyFOX. Seven units were damaged in the fire.
Firefighters shot streams of water from below and via a ladder truck above, at the scene located off Pontiac Trail and between Welch and Haggerty roads.
The cause of the fire was an electrical contract worker who hit a gas line causing it to ignite while he was performing work, according to a spokesperson from Consumers Energy.
There are no injuries reported. The entire complex has no gas service.
Firefighters were still at the scene after 10 p.m. putting out hot spots.
