First gay marriages take place across metro Detroit

The first gay marriages have happened in metro Detroit, just hours after the Supreme Court handed down its historic ruling Friday.

The justices ruled same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states.

The number of states allowing same-sex marriage has grown rapidly. As recently as October, just over one-third of the states permitted same-sex marriage. Until now, same-sex couples could only marry in 36 states, the District of Columbia and parts of Missouri.

FOX 2's Robin Murdoch was with Bill and Steve from Livonia as they got married in Wayne County. They've been together for 45 years.

They say they were just discussing which state they'd like to move to, but now they don't have to anymore after today's ruling.

"Every Monday and Thursday, we've been waiting with our shirts ironed just ready to go."
