Former Inkster officer enters not-guilty plea at arraignment

A not-guilty plea was entered Friday for William Melendez, the former Inkster officer charged in a police beating video.

Melendez is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm, strangulation and misconduct.

The charges are in connection with a dash cam video of a traffic stop from back in January. Floyd Dent was pulled over for running a stop sign. Dash cam video shows Dent being hit in the face repeatedly by police. The officer seen in the video was identified as William Melendez.

Melendez was fired as an Inkster officer but denies wrongdoing. A $1.4 million settlement has been reached between Dent and the city.

Melendez is due back in court on June 26.
