Curl Up & Dye in midtown Detroit is only green salon in Michigan

Most of us have a favorite brand of shampoo or conditioner that we use, but you might be shocked to find out about some of the toxic ingredients that are used to make that product.

Curl Up & Dye, in midtown Detroit is committed to using only non-toxic personal care products on clients.

Owner Jennifer Willemsen says her salon is the only one in Michigan that uses all-natural, non-toxic products.

She opened her award-winning salon on Cass Avenue back in 2008 right away, the response was overwhelming. Customers come because she's a gifted stylist but they also come for something else.

"Its the products I keep coming back for," said client Irene Lietz. "She always looks for the healthiest way to do things and she's very concerned about the environment and our health."

Jenn became concerned when she started reading about the potentially dangerous ingredients that go into products we use every day - things like petroleum.

"It's disgusting, it's a disgusting product, and it's 99 percent of the products out there," she said. 

At one point she had trouble finding all-natural products - so she started producing her own line, Cass Brand Organics that she sells at the salon. 

Products she uses on clients are all made from natural ingredients.

"There are no toxins," she said, adding that she's proud to be making a difference. "It feels good to see that one person can positively impact one more person. That one person goes and impacts others. I know that happens because those people come here too."
