Fundraiser Thursday for family of slain Highland Park reserve officer

Help is on the way for the family of Roderick Jones, the off-duty Highland Park reserve officer shot to death outside a Detroit nightclub.

Jones, 26, a veteran Army Ranger, was ambushed outside the Opyum Lounge off Eight Mile on Detroit's east side.

Detroit police arrested and charged 35-year-old Walter Jennings with Jones'murder.

A fundraiser was scheduled for the Opyum Lounge tonight for Jones' family which includes four sons. The event lasts until 2 a.m.

It is the first time the club has opened since the shooting.

"We want people to know the type of person Roderick was," said Cynthia Jackson, who works at the club. "We want people to come out, support and donate for his family."

All of the money raised goes to his family and all are welcome.

The Opyum Lounge is at 24587 Eight Mile Road.
