Going for a spin at Detroit's Belle Isle Grand Prix

They'll be taking turns at over 100 MPH this weekend at the Chevrolet Bell Isle Grand Prix but before that happens, FOX 2's Roop Raj took a turn in the pace car.

One of the best drivers around is Will Powers. Great name, especially for a driver. This guy is so talented, he told Roop that the drive Thursday morning was the first time he'd driven the pace car. He of course waited until after they got in. 

The Chevy Corvette was a breeze for the Indy Car champion because at Grand Prix, it's not about speed alone -- it's technique.

The track is as tough and gritty as the city it sits on. Bud Denker with the Belle Isle Grand Prix said this year's experience will be unlike any other before it.

"So much is new this year including $4.5 million of track improvements. Road improvements, new drainage, new sidewalks, new bike lanes. That's all big for Belle Isle and important for our city to have those improvements. (There's also) new lighting - LED lighting  - across the MacArthur bridge. The Scott Fountain will be flowing all summer long," Denker said. 

The thrill of the ride is exhilarating.  You knew getting in the Corvette pace car would be stomach altering at the right speeds but to feel it  For a car lover like myself can only be described as a thrill ride that won't be soon forgotten. 

Rain or shine, this race is happening this weekend at Belle Isle.
