Hamtramck police chief resigns amid ongoing investigation

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) -- Hamtramck police chief has resigned amid a pending investigation.

The city announced Wednesday that Maxwell Garbarino is stepping down and his resignation will be effective immediately. He had been placed on paid administrative leave last week for undisclosed reasons stemming from an investigation.

Mayor Karen Majewski says she isn't aware of any details regarding the investigation, including who's conducting it and how long it will take.

The city will begin the process of looking for a new police chief, while Lt. Anne Moise serves as interim chief.

Garbarino joined the department in 2001 and was named chief in 2012.
