Highland Park officer killed in 'ambush' shooting at night club

A reserve police officer for the city of Highland Park was shot and killed while working as security for a local club late Friday night.

Roderick Jones, a reservist officer for the city of Highland Park was working at Club Opyum on Detroit's west side when he was shot and killed.

Police say the incident started when Jones kicked two men out of the club.

The men then went to a car in the parking lot and waited for the officer, ambushing him when the night was over, firing several shots at the man.

His sister Candice Jones can not understand why anyone would want to harm Jones. "I'm very saddened that someone would take his life over something so simple as being kicked out of a club," she says.

Jones was taken to Botsford Hospital where he later died while in surgery police say.

Highland Park Police say Jones had been with the department for roughly a year. Jones was an ex-Army Ranger, having done a tour in Afghanistan. Jones was also a father of four boys.

Detroit Police say they've arrested 5 people in relation to this incident. Charges are expected to come soon.
