Hit and run leaves 12-year-old critically injured

Detroit police are looking for a suspect who hit a 12-year-old boy and kept driving.

Davonte Ester is in critical condition while his family is asking anyone who saw something to come forward.

"The next thing you know there was a boom and someone hit him." said his sister, Alexandria Lee. "I need you to come forward, we need some type of closure. It may have been an accident. You may have been intoxicated we just need you to come forward."

Police say Devonte was riding his bike on a pedestrian bridge over the Lodge freeway Friday evening. When he came off the bridge he was hit by a vehicle that kept going and left the scene.

"What type of person just hits someone and leaves the scene especially a kid," Lee said. "He's not opening his eyes, he's not talking, he's not doing anything. His leg is broken, he does have swelling, his head is huge."

Devonte's sister says the family hopes he will make a full recovery, but his injuries may prevent  him from attending school in the fall.

The family wants anyone with information to come forward, contacting Detroit police at 313-596-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
