Illinois man charged in Romulus carjacking that led to Amber Alert

Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday afternoon an Illinois man has been charged with carjacking and child abduction at a hotel in Romulus.

Jawaan Johnson, 23, was charged Monday in connection to the Saturday morning carjacking and child abduction that resulted in an Amber Alert.

Johnson is accused to carjacking a car from a 24-year-old woman and then drove off with her 16-month-old child in the back seat. Around 5:00 that morning, an Amber Alert was issued for 16-month-old Ayden Casteels.

A witness called police after seeing a man that matched Johnson's description and he was arrested near Merriman and Michigan Ave that same day. Little Ayden was found unharmed and returned to his mother.

Johnson was charged Monday with two counts of carjacking, kidnapping, and larceny. He's being held on a $100,000 bond.
