Jim Harbaugh helps rescue motorists from crash on I-94 in Ann Arbor Tuesday

Tuesday was a very busy day for first responders in metro Detroit. The snow, sleet and rain kept fire and police crews very busy as they worked accident after accident along Michigan's roadways.Ann Arbor Fire Battalion chief Robert Vogel says, "it's been a busy day, we've had a lot of car accidents."

That happened to be the case at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday when firefighters were called out on an accident on I-94 in Ann Arbor.

"The lady was traveling westbound on 94 and witnesses reported that she started to roll and then went over the median and then landed in the eastbound lanes," says Vogel of the accident. The accident was serious and brought traffic to a halt.

According to police, the accident happened on Interstate 94 between Saline and State Street. But before firefighters arrived, coach Harbaugh and his assistant, Jim Minick were already on scene. They came out and offered their coats and provided first aid until help arrived.

Police say the driver, who was wearing her seatbelt, was partially ejected from the vehicle, through the driver side window. The 73 year old female passenger remained seatbelted in the Jeep.

At the same time, police say University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was on I-94 racing to catch a flight.

Chief Vogel says the firefighters were obviously focused on rescuing the two victims and were unaware Harbaugh was there until he was ready to leave.

"He did a great job just staying out of the way. When we arrived as a matter of fact the coach and witnesses helped us move cars because we had to get ambulances moving after the victims had been put in," says Vogel.

Police say a dog was rescued from the wreck as well. The driver and passenger were transported to St Joseph Hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver was found responsible for the crash, traveling to fast for road conditions.
