Join a bike ride to combat homelessness

DETROIT (AP) -- A private, nonprofit human services organization has opened registration for a biking event that will raise funds to help end homelessness in Detroit.

The Neighborhood Services Organization -- NSO -- will hold Handlebars for the Homeless on Aug. 16.

The 16-mile guided tour will take bicyclists through the University of Detroit Mercy campus, Sherwood Forest, Boston Edison and some of the city's other beautiful neighborhoods and parks.

Officials have said about 16,200 people are believed to be living on Detroit streets or in temporary shelters.

The NSO provides services and outreach for children, adults and families. It also provides permanent supportive housing, a respite center for the homeless and mobile outreach for the homeless on Detroit streets.
