Lansing mother to cops: "I was trying to kill my daughter"

A Lansing woman has been arrested in Ohio after deputies say she called 911 from a northwest Ohio waterpark parking lot and told dispatchers that she tried to kill her 7-month-old daughter.

Ruth Smith, 33, was arrested on attempted murder charges in Erie County after calling 911 from her car in the parking lot of Kalahari resort.

Deputies say they received the call around 3:30 p.m. Friday from Smith. She started the call calmly and asked for deputies to come over to Kalahari Waterpark. The dispatcher asked what was going on and Smith became hysterical as she claimed she was trying to kill her daughter. The dispatcher had difficulty understanding Smith because of her crying and high-pitched voice. He asked Smith to repeat it several times before he was able to clearly understand her.

According to FOX 8 in Cleveland, the little girl was in the back seat of her car when deputies arrived and appeared to be fine but was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The Sandusky Register says she admitted to planning to kill her daughter for the past couple of days because of a custody dispute with the girl's father. The paper says she drove from Lansing to Kalahari and waited for her daughter to fall asleep before using pillow to smother the toddler. The Register said Smith believed the child had died but when she woke up a short time later, Smith called 911.

Smith was booked into the Erie County jail for attempted murder.
