The Livonia man asked for anonymity but the Michigan Lottery he was pumping gas at the BP station on 5 Mile in Livonia. He had to go inside to get his receipt because the printer failed. That was a stroke of luck. As he headed towards the door, he grabbed a couple of winning tickets out of the car and was given explicit instructions.
"On my way in, my girlfriend told me not to buy any lottery tickets, but I didn't listen," the man said. "I bought one 50X The Cash ticket and paid for it with my two $5 winners."
That ticket had simple rules: you get five 'winning numbers' across the top and 20 of 'your numbers' in the box underneath. Match one of your numbers to one of the winning numbers and you win the prize associated with your number. His lucky number was 27 and it was at the bottom row. Underneath that was the $1 million prize.
He did all of this while hiding in the can. He snuck the lucky ticket into the lavatory where he did his scratching.
"I scratched the ticket in the bathroom and thought I was having a heart attack when I saw it was a $1 million winner," the man told state lottery officials.
The man's not getting $1 million; he took the lump sum payout of $634,517 and plans to head to Europe and invest the rest.
"We've always wanted to go to Scotland, and this will give us the opportunity to do that," the winner said. "Maybe next time my girlfriend won't be as skeptical when I'm feeling lucky and want to buy a Lottery ticket."
There are still two $1 million prize tickets out there as we as eight tickets worth $250,000, 242 tickets worth $10,000 and 2,412 worth $1,000.
