1 arrested, 1 at large after shootout in Fairlane

DEARBORN - The lockdown at Fairlane Mall was lifted about three hours ago, after a shootout inside.

Police say the shooting happened in a common area outside a jewelry store. One was shot at and the victim returned fire. Luckily, no one was seriously injured. The mall then immediately went on lockdown, no one in or out.

At about 6:15 p.m. Dearborn police said the situation was under control and that shoppers were no longer in danger.

Gunshots rang out at about 4:30 p.m. witnesses say.

"I heard two big loud sounds and I ran," said Erica Taylor, who works in the mall.

It was an undeniable sound, but it was still hard for some to believe it was happening inside the mall in Dearborn.

"It was like an echo," said Candice Gadley, who works in the mall. "But when I saw people running, I was like, it must have been a shooting."

Gadley works at Macy's, which was a good distance away from the shooting.

"Yeah I was scared, because I didn't know what was going on and security guards said 'Get in your store,'" she said. "(It made) us feel like I had to get on the ground."

At that point police put the mall on lockdown.

"T-Mobile is next door and they closed gate instantly," Gadley said. "Then American Eagle."

Police then posted up at the major entrances, looking for the shooter. FOX 2 was told police found the person who fired return shots, but have not located the person who fired first.

So far, police have not released a description of the suspect.

Surrounding businesses were also locked down for a few hours and both Henry Ford Community College and University of Michigan-Dearborn cancelled classes for the night.
