Heat prompts early dismissal at some Detroit schools

Detroit Public Schools Community District says some of its buildings will have an early dismissal at 1:30 p.m. due to the lack of air conditioning in the buildings.

The schools include:

  • Cody High School Campus
  • Communications and Media Arts
  • Detroit International Academy for Young Women
  • Detroit Lions Academy
  • Osborn High School Campus
  • Randolph Vocational High School
  • Renaissance High School 
  • Turning Point Academy
  • Western International High School
  • East English Village Preparatory High School
  • Ludington Magnet Middle School
  • Davis/Golightly CTC

A Heat Advisory has been issued for all of southeastern Michigan. Very humid air and temperatures near 90 degrees will make it feel like its close to 100 degrees outside. 

The district says all K-8 schools in the Detroit Public Schools Community District have a regularly scheduled early dismissal, which will proceed as normal for the Wednesday schedule.

Extra water will be provided to all schools today due to the heat.

Due to the heat advisory, Clippert Multicultural Honors Academy's students will also be dismissed at 1 p.m. 

A handful of EAA schools will also be dismissing early:

  • Nolan Elementary Middle School will dismiss at 2:00 pm.
  • Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary Middle School will dismiss at 1:30 pm.
  • Nolan Elementary-Middle School will dismiss at 2:00 pm.
  • Southeastern High School of Technology and Law will dismiss at 1:30 pm.
  • Denby High School will dismiss at 2:00 pm.
  • Pershing High School will dismiss at 1:30 pm.
  • Henry Ford High School will dismiss at 1:30 pm.
