ON CAMERA: $2,000 of snacks stolen from Detroit gas station

Suspects were caught on video stealing from a Citgo gas station in Detroit.

- A gas station on Detroit's east side was ransacked as thieves carried entire racks of snacks out of the store, stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of food. Now the community is stepping up, taking to Facebook to help police catch the suspects.

The crooks took more than $2,000 worth of snacks, boxes, racks and trays on 11:30 p.m. Aug. 10 from the store in the 5000 block of Van Dyke.  Police have shared the surveillance footage in hopes of catching the suspects.

"We've been having problems here especially at night time," said manager Walid Elmodade. "And they pick what they can. ... We called the police. That's all we can do."

A FOX 2 viewer saw a Facebook post of someone who may have bragged that he committed the crime. The police say they are investigating that lead. FOX 2 is not naming the viewer or the name of the possible bragging suspect.

The way that crimes are often solved is through tips by the public. If you have any information about this crime, you're asked to give Detroit police a call at (313) 596-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

"The chief and the mayor have often said we can't do this without our community," said Sgt. Michael Woody. "The chief has been out there and talks about how the police are the community and the community is the police."
