A 13-year-old boy is dead after being shot while play with a gun on Detroit's west side.

Police said the shooting happened on Tireman Street Monday.

According to police, another teen was showing his grandmother's gun to friends when the shooting happened.

The 13-year-old was shot in the chest and died from his injuries.

According to police, three boys were playing video games when they invited the 13-year-old to the home to play with them. Police said one of the boys then went up upstairs to get the revolver and show it to the other children.

Police said that's when the gun went off, hitting the 13-year-old in the chest. It's unknown who was handling the gun at the time.

The gun was not in a safe and did not have a trigger lock. The shooting is believed to be accidental and police said it was due to the gun not being properly secured.

Police tell FOX 2 they have the grandmother who owns the weapon in custody at this time.

Police said the teenagers were unsupervised at the time of the shooting. School in Metro Detroit was closed due to the weather and if not for the heavy snow, the children likely would have been in class.

Police on the scene unsuccessfully tried CPR on the boy. Detroit police has deployed the support team to help the officers who are emotionally distressed from the shooting.
