Nearly a dozen bullets fly in the middle of I-94 early Friday afternoon.

Detroit and Michigan State Police worked along westbound I-94 near southbound M-10 all day Friday.

State police say around 12:30 p.m. a 28-year-old man driving a Pontiac G6 west on 94 became the victim of rapid gunfire.

"It's busy around this time as far as traffic, according to a witness it was a surprise," said Lt. Calvin Hart, Michigan State Police. It was a surprise."

The Pontiac appeared to crash as sources say three bullets hit the man -- one in the back of his head, another in his arm and another in his leg.

Sources also say nearly a dozen spent shell casings were found in the area and roughly the same amount in the driver's side door.

The shooter -- witnesses say -- quickly driving off westbound on I-94.  Per a source, police are looking for a dark blue SUV, possibly a foreign model, with the driver described as a black male.

State police say the victim appears to have been targeted.

"At the scene there's only one car that has bullet holes," said Hart. "We don't have any information that he was involved in the crash, subsequent to the shooting."

They say a 25-year-old woman riding in the passenger seat had not been hit

Windows shattered, several other drivers stopped to help. That shooting victim was able to call 911 himself and was taken to Henry Ford Hospital, undergoing surgery and in critical condition Friday.

"We're trying to gather information from the victim that was not injured in this incident," Hart said.

On top of that, sources say police are working with MDOT and Wayne state University to review camera footage. Meanwhile, believing there may have been more witnesses; investigators hope to swiftly track down that shooter.

"If there's anybody who has information, give us a call in this incident," Hart said.
