A state trooper and three others were injured in an overnight crash on I-75 in Hazel Park.

- A Michigan State police trooper and three others were injured in an overnight accident on I-75 northbound in Hazel Park.

According to police, a trooper made a traffic stop on I-75 near 9 Mile Road at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

The trooper had arrested the driver of that vehicle on a warrant and had just finished putting the arrested driver in the front passenger seat of his patrol car, when another vehicle merging onto the freeway drove onto the shoulder at a high rate of speed and rear-ended the trooper's patrol car.

The trooper, who was outside of the car, was subsequently struck by his own vehicle.

The offending vehicle then rolled over the patrol car, hitting a female passenger, who was standing outside of the initial vehicle that had been pulled over.

The trooper, the arrestee, and the female passenger were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The trooper is listed in good condition with minor injuries, as is the person who was arrested. The female passenger is listed in serious condition.

The male driver of the vehicle that caused the accident was uninjured. However, the female passenger is being treated for minor injuries.

The freeway was closed for approximately four hours to investigate. It is undetermined if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Witnesses in the area told FOX 2 what they saw.

"It came right up behind it, hit it, flipped over it, and sat upside down on the hood and the trunk of the car that was pulled over," said Andrew Jezierski.

Another witness, Bernard Denny, said the squad car and the pulled over car seemed to be too close to the highway during the traffic stop,

"The guy he pulled over didn't pull over quite enough," he said.

At the time of the crash, the trooper happened to be standing outside his patrol car. Witnesses who saw the wreckage said it's a good thing he wasn't any closer.

"Thank God everyone survived," Denny said.
