3 suspects sought after car stolen with baby inside, Amber Alert issued

- Detroit Police are searching for three suspects involved with an Amber Alert out of Detroit early Monday morning. The Amber Alert was issued for 3-month-old Dakota Grimes just after 7 a.m. She was still in the backseat of a car that had been reported stolen from a liquor store earlier that night.

Police say Dakota's father left his car running and unlocked when he went inside McDonnel Drugs, which is on Harper Avenue between Whittier Avenue and Cadieux Road. When he got out it was gone -- and so was his little girl.

Dakota was found safe on the front porch of a home a couple blocks away from the liquor store around 8 a.m. Dakota appeared to be unharmed when she was found, though she was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

"It's just a miracle. She was sleeping like a little baby, cutest little thing you would want to see," says Gary Zielinski, who found the baby. You can hear more from him and the discovery he made by watching Robin Murdoch's report in the video player above.

Police are still looking for the stolen car, and three suspects they believe to be involved. The stolen car is a 2006 four-door white Chevy Impala. It has damage to its back end, and has the license plate number CPG-8598.

"If I had to guess - I put my law enforcement experience hat on for a moment - they saw an opportunity and jumped in the car and after they pulled off the realized there was a child," says Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "It'd have been nice to just drop the child off at the police station but they didn't do that."

Chief Craig said he spoke with Dakota's mother and father and says they are appreciative of all the work it took to find their daughter.

Police do not have much of a description of the suspects to go off of, but they believe the driver of the stolen vehicle is a black man with braids in his hair.
