Detroit police say a 3-year-old boy's body has been found in an apartment in the 4400 block of Trumbull.
According to police, a maintenance man went into the Madison Estates apartment building and found the child's body on a bed.
A police source said the maintenance man smelled an odor coming from an apartment and he used his key to get inside, the source said he found the boy decomposing on the bed.
Capt. Darin Szilagy said that the call was received just before 3 p.m.
"It's too early to know (the cause of death)," he said. "The medical examiner will have the cause of death sometime in the near future."
Szilagy said that the mother is not a suspect, but a well-being check still needs to be done on her.
"We don't know if she's a suspect, we're not sure what her involvement is," he said. "We don't know if she's a victim of something, or if she needs help right now."
The source said there were also some pills found in the room but it's unknown what they were used for.
It's unknown how long the boy had been dead and left in the apartment.
The apartment is between Grand River and the Lodge in Detroit.
Detroit police say the boy's age is estimated to be 3 years old due to how badly decomposed the body was.
