Redford parents charged in 10-year-old son's accidental shooting

- It is a story that's become all too common - a child gets ahold of a gun and it goes off.

Wednesday night a 10-year-old Redford Township boy is expected to be okay, recovering at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, while his parents are under arrest.

Police say he was home with his dad on Winston Street near Five Mile at 5:15 p.m. When Dad left the living room his 10-year-old son managed to pick up his mother's gun. The boy fired the gun once straight into his hand.

The father, David Jaron Cleveland Sr., 29, is in custody at the Redford police lockup. His wife, the boy's mother, LaTonya Renee Cleveland, 29, was arrested at Beaumont Hospital.

The couple will be arraigned Thursday, both will be charged with 2nd degree Child Abuse, Careless Discharge of a Firearm Causing Injury and they both will get Felony Firearm.

Their son is in the custody of Child Protective Services.

He was rushed to Beaumont and as he was recovering, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy wrote arrest warrants for the mother and father.

"We all must come together on this issue of children getting access to unsecured, loaded guns," Worthy said in a statement. "0It is our job to try at every bend and turn to save children from themselves. Literally."
