DETROIT (WJBK) - The City of Detroit is working to help homeowners avoid foreclosure.
On Saturday, the city hosted a property tax assistance fair. City officials worked with people who may be eligible for programs to lower their property taxes.
"There are a lot of programs that can help lower your tax bill, can help you get on a payment plan to alleviate the burden on you so you can keep your home," said Debra Pospiech, deputy treasurer for tax of the City of Detroit.
Nearly 9,000 homeowners in the city are at risk of losing their homes.
City leaders said everyone who needs to get on a payment plan should do so before June 30. After that day, interest rates soar to 18 percent.
Right now, on a payment plan, Detroiters can pay only 6 percent. You can get on a payment plan by contacting the city or the Wayne County treasurer's office.
