Hunger Free Summer provides 2.2 million meals, passes goal

For the summer, our campaign provided 2.2 million meals for hungry children.

A new school year is just a few days away and many local children, who would have gone hungry, are heading back to school healthy after your donations to create a hunger-free summer.

Detroit Edison Public Academy is one of the many sites in Southeast Michigan where children had healthy meals every day while on summer break. Franchesca Covington is the food service coordinator and says they have a group of kids that come in this time of year.

"It's been great. We have probably about 60 kids that we feed every day during the summer," Covington said.

Natalie Fotias works at Gleaners and knows the sad truth: hunger doesn't take a break.

"There's over 300,000 kids in southeast michigan that rely on the free lunch program during school...and when school is out, a lot of low income families really struggle to make up for those meals," Fotias said.

That's why we team up with Gleaners Community Food Bank for the Hunger Free Summer campaign with the goal of providing two million meals to hungry children. That goal was passed thanks to your generous donations!

For the summer, our campaign provided 2.2 million meals! Your dollars were doubled by corporate partners and many of you dropped non-perishable food at Gardner-White Furniture locations.

"Wwe can't be more grateful for all the support we've had and we truly thank everyone for any kind fo gift they can make, large or small it all makes a huge impact," Fotias said.

Your help is still needed. Drop off non-perishable food items at any Gardner-White location through Sunday. Plus, your donations will be doubled through Labor Day by calling 855-315-FOOD.
