Hundreds stage peaceful protest in downtown Detroit

Hundreds crammed Campus Martius Park as the speakers at the rally address racial tension.

It was a show of unity from a multicultural and multigenerational crowd.

"This is exactly what I wanted I wanted  to see people from different cultures," said Justin Burks, of Detroit.

Detroit Police were staffed strong, with both uniform and plain clothes.

"We had an opportunity to meet with the organizers we said we want a peaceful event," said Cmmdr. Elvin Barren.

And that was exactly what they got at the gathering, with a huge show of support for unity after a bloody and tragic week across the country after police involved killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile in Minnesota and Louisiana respectively, as well as the Dallas attack.

"We found out about this two days ago," said Danielle Harvey. "And I think even the organizers were surprised at the turnout. "
