GROSSE ILE, Mich. (WJBK) - A motorcycle slid under this trailer being pulled by a large truck injuring a Grosse Ile police officer Todd Brozek.
"My heart stopped because when you hear officer down, we know what's been going on throughout the country," said Brian Loftus, Grosse Ile Township supervisor.
But this was something altogether different - Officer Brozek - a 15 year veteran - was on road patrol Wednesday afternoon when it appears he had to suddenly lay down his bike at Meridian and Groh.
"The motor officer slid underneath the low boy and the low boy trailer did run him over," said Police Chief Joseph Porcarelli
Take a look at that trailer carrying a Bobcat, being pulled by a large commercial truck. It is still under investigation but it appears the truck may have just turned in front of the officer.
"The gentleman was arrested for OUID," Porcarelli said. "He is on his way right now to get a blood test - he is under arrest and in our custody."
That driver suspected of being under the influence and appeared unsteady during his field sobriety test. A Breathalyzer revealed it wasn't alcohol - the driver was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and transported to the hospital.
In the meantime Brozek is in the hospital, in a lot of pain and suffering from broken bones, undergoing testing but fortunately, expected to recover.
"He just said he was okay - he was in a lot of pain," Porcarelli said. "At this point he is conscious and breathing on his own."
"He's pretty banged up," Loftus said. "But he should be - we're all praying for a full recovery."
