Army Staff Sergeant learns Detroit home burned, robbed, while at Army training

A woman who was away at Army training learned that not only did her home burn, many valuable items were stolen as well.

- A single mom on duty-training in Virginia learned terrible news that not only did her Detroit home burn, someone also robbed her of any valuable possessions that may have survived the fire. Adding insult to injury, the fire may have been intentionally set.

Shacara Green said she couldn't believe that her and her four children don't have a place to call home any long. The Army Staff Sergeant was at military training in Virginia when she got the bad news that her home went up in flames Sunday morning. Immediately after learning of the fire, Green was in her car and coming back to Detroit.

"It just put me in a downward spiral," Green said. "Nothing was able to be salvaged. It basically destroyed me."

Nobody was home when the fire started because her kids were staying with her mother, Delores Green. She was the first one to pull up to the charred remains.

"We come over periodically to check mail and clean up, do what we have to do...but they lost everything," Delores said.

Once the flames were extinguished, Shacara says she learned that much more than a fire had taken place.

"Flatscreen TV in my bedroom is gone completely, all of my shoes are gone completely, my jewelry drawer was empty, I run a couple of businesses - all my direct sales and products were taken," she said.

This family says they still can't believe what happened and are now working to find a way to get back on their feet

"Right now I'm on my way home and as soon as I get there, my first priority is - I have to see my home for myself," Shacara said.

Officials are still investigating the fire and at this time, the cause is undetermined. Shacara, a member of the military for 13 years, says she will not let this incident defeat her

"Once I piece everything together I have to work on trying to find a place for me and my kids," Shacara said.
