DETROIT (WJBK) - Former Michigan State basketball star Keith Appling was arrested overnight after allegedly throwing a weapon on the window and trying to flee an officer.
In recent months, Appling has been arrested at least three times. The latest incident happened on Detroit's east side early Monday morning.
Police say they pulled him over for failing to signal while turning, and when they approached the driver there was a heavy smell of marijuana coming from the car.
He did have a medical marijuana card on him, but officers told Appling he couldn't be smoking in the car and asked him to step out so they could search for narcotics.
Police say Appling refused to get out of the car, and rolled his window up. An officer's arm became trapped in the window, as the officer was still holding Appling's license and other paperwork.
The officer was able to yank his arm free from the window, and then police say Appling took off. Police followed him and Appling eventually came to a complete stop a few blocks away.
When police approached the car again, they noticed the passenger's seat was changed and didn't see a blue Gucci bag anymore that they noticed earlier.
Police backtracked and found the bag on the side of the road. Police say inside the bag was a pair of gym shoes and a handgun with 10 live rounds.
Appling was arrested and has been taken to the Detroit Detention Center.
Appling previously news in June for suspicions of carrying a concealed weapon. Sources say the same officer who was involved in the June incident was involved in this morning's arrest, too.
Appling has also previously been in trouble for drugs and weapons charges that stemmed from a situation outside a strip club in Dearborn in May.
Appling played for the Spartans from 2010-2014.
