DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police and fire department faced-off in an epic battle Thursday night. It was a friendly competition of who could eat the most coneys in the fastest time.
It was part of the 6h Annual Coney Dog Eating Challenge at American Coney Island.
Assistant chief Steve Dolunt helped fellow memebers of the force clinch their victory over the firefighters.
In five minutes, the boys in blue scarfed down 28 chili dogs. The firefighters managed 22.
But, really, everybody wins.
The annual charity event benefits the Detroit Police Fund and the Detroit Firemen's Benevolent Fund.
"We have to take care of them. If we don't give back to the guys who take care of us, we've got nothing," says American Coney Island owner Grace Keros.
A civilian competition happened outside the restaurant, too.
Our own FOX 2 photographer Matt Phillips came in second place, but he just couldn't beat Matt Holowicki of Plymouth. Holowicki also took the top prize in 2014 and 2015.
This year, he ate a record 20 hot dogs.
