2 killed when minivan crashes with garbage truck

Two people were killed Monday night after a minivan crashed into a garbage truck in Oxford Township.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Ray Road near Oxford Road.

Police say the garbage truck was having mechanical issues and had to stop. That's when a 2003 Chrysler Town and Country minivan slammed into the back of it.

Three adults and a 5-year-old child were inside the van at the time of the crash. Police say the adults included the child's parents and a family friend.

The father and the family friend were killed in the crash. The 5-year-old child and his mother have been taken to the hospital. The mother is listed in temporary serious condition and the child is in stable condition.

The deceased victims were both 43 years old and were from Oxford Township. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger, who was seated behind the driver, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of that garbage truck suffered minor injuries.

Police say the driver of the minivan was not wearing a seatbelt, and they are investigating if others in the vehicle were. Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor at this time.
