2-year-old rescued from waters by Belle Isle

A family got a happy ending Labor Day on Belle Isle after their 2-year-old child went missing in the water.

State police, the Coast Guard and border patrol all took part in the frantic search for the boy. An off-duty firefighter, though, finally spotted the boy floating in the water around 8 p.m.

The child was about 25 yards offshore, and was floating on his back, alert and breathing.

It's unclear if the child went into the water on purpose or if he fell.

The boy was taken to a hospital for treatment, and was reported breathing and in stable condition Monday night.

Authorities closed off Belle Isle while they searched for the boy. Some visitors were forced to remain on the island in the Detroit River during the search.
