The future USS Detroit will be commissioned next month right here in Detroit.
But now it's in a shipyard in Wisconsin -- where all hands are on deck to get it done.
When it is commissioned next month, this will be the Navy's newest warship. this is largest employer in the area. About 2,300 employees come to work on it each day with about 40 percent from Michigan.
Officials say from the time they get the steel to the time it is put in the water, it takes about two years. The combat ship was envisioned to go close to the shore and operate at high speeds.
Once construction is finished, it is launched, then tested and then tested again before it is sold to the Navy and sailors begin to move in - it is about another year-long process.
The crew took over the Detroit and has been in residence on the ship for the last month and a half. Officials say 11 more Littoral combat ship vessels are in the works right now.
