Several suspicious fires being investigated on Detroit's East Side

Fire tore through a house on Moran St. early Thursday morning. Just as firefighters put that fire out, a second blaze broke out just blocks away. Now, police are worried an arsonist is on the loose.

- A vacant house went up in flames at around 5:00 a.m. Thursday on Moran St. near E. Davison in Detroit.

A next door neighbor describes what she heard.

"The next thing I knew it was exploding. Boom!" said Kimberly Lust whose home was damaged by the fire.

"I ran back in the house and said, 'We have to get out of here,'" said Lust.

Her home was damaged by the flames, but Lust says a few minutes later, there was more destruction.

Residents say a house a short distance away was also set on fire Thursday morning.

"Someone is going around here setting fires. As soon as they came over here, five minutes later there were over here on Gallagher."

These Thursday morning fires aren't the only fiery explosions the neighborhood has been forced to deal with.

"This enormous explosion blew the roof off my entire garage," said Harrison Bartlett.

Back on Moran St., a resident says he got hurt when his garage was set on fire earlier this week.

"I just got this one little burn from where I was holding the hose. It was so hot it just burned me," said Bartlett.

Residents believe these fires are the work of an arsonist.

"I can't sleep at night. I sleep with one eye open,” said Bartlett.

Fire officials say they're on the case and are using a dog to help with the investigation.

The Chief of Arson tells Fox 2 that the three fires in the area over the past few days are being investigated as possible arson.

However, it has not been determined the fires were intentionally set. The Chief went on to say that his department has received good information from residents that will assist with the investigation.

As the investigation continues, residents say they are fed up and they want the person setting these fires off the street.

"I'm going to be sleeping in the daytime driving around at night,” said Lust. “I'm going to catch him."
