Coolant leak shuts down Berkley Ice Arena, city seeking redevelopment proposals

- All activities for the remainder of the winter season have been canceled at the Berkley Ice Arena.

According to the city officials, the closure is due to a coolant leak under the building.

The ice surface began to soften on Sept. 29 and repair efforts were unsuccessful.

Experts determined the leak in the cooling system comes from under the concrete floor, which would be a time consuming and costly repair.

"We are saddened by this situation," City Manager Matt Baumgarten said in a release. "We must take this time and consider what can be done given the city's remaining capital needs and plan for the future. Residents will be engaged in the decision process as viable options for the arena become clear."

The city is now searching for a public sector partner for a Berkley Parks & Recreation Complex redevelopment project.

Interested developers can submit proposals on the city's website, www.berkleymich.org.
